Want to turn a simple idea into a cool 3D wooden model? With the xTool P2 laser cutter, it’s easier than you think! In this guide, we’ll show you how to prepare your artwork, cut your design, and put everything together. Let’s get started and make something amazing!
GETTING YOUR ARTWORK READY
Start by picking the right material. We’re using 3mm basswood from the xTool material pack. Basswood is great because it’s easy to cut and works well for detailed designs. The pack comes with different types of wood, so you can choose what fits your project best.
Make sure your design matches the thickness of the wood. For example, if the wood is 3mm thick, any slots or inserts should also be 3mm wide so they fit snugly. Arrange your design on the wood carefully to avoid wasting material. A good tip is to color-code your design to make it easier to cut:
- Red: For cutting
- Black: For scoring
- Blue: For engraving
You can grab the art work we used for the example here.
SETTING UP THE XTOOL SOFTWARE
Once your design is ready, open it in the xTool software. Assign the right settings to each part of your project. Cutting, scoring, and engraving each need different settings. Color coding helps you adjust everything quickly.

Keep the thickness of your material in mind, especially if it’s a little warped. For example, if the wood isn’t perfectly flat, you can increase the thickness setting slightly to ensure the laser cuts evenly. Use the software’s spot-check tool to measure and align your material automatically. This step keeps everything accurate.
USING THE XTOOL P2
Now that your settings are ready, it’s time to set up your laser cutter. Place your wood on the cutting bed and center it as much as possible. Moving it slightly forward helps you use more of the material. Use the reframing feature to make sure the laser is lined up perfectly with your design.

When everything looks good, start the laser! Watch as your design is cut and engraved with precision.
PUTTING YOUR MODEL TOGETHER
Once the laser finishes cutting, it’s time to assemble your model. First, try putting the pieces together without glue to make sure they fit. If everything lines up, you can add a small amount of glue to hold it all in place. Take your time so the final model looks neat.
To make your model stand out, consider adding personal touches like engraving a name or adding some paint. For our project, we made a 3D trophy that looks great and works as a prize for our xTool class competitions.
TIPS FOR SUCCESS
- Plan your design carefully to save material.
- Test your settings on a scrap piece before cutting your final design.
- Don’t be afraid to try new designs and materials—you’ll learn as you go!
FINISHING UP
Making 3D models with the xTool P2 is fun and rewarding. Whether it’s a trophy, a decoration, or a gift, the possibilities are endless.
