Transforming Wood and Cardboard into Puzzles with xTool Laser Engravers | Screenprinting.com

Darryl's here with some exciting updates on the latest laser equipment. Today, he's going bananas with puzzles using the F1 and S1 laser engravers. Let’s dive into the process and see how you can create your own custom puzzles with ease!

GETTING STARTED WITH THE F1 LASER

Set the Laser Height: Begin by ensuring the laser of the F1 is set to the proper height. This is done by matching the red and blue dots so they overlap. Proper height adjustment is crucial for achieving precise cuts and engravings.

Check Placement: Hit the framing button to project a preview of where the laser will cut. This allows for perfect alignment of the material, ensuring that the design falls exactly where intended.

Process Settings: On the computer, double-check all the settings. For this specific banana puzzle piece, the process is calculated to take about 11 minutes. Ensuring the settings are correct helps avoid any mishaps during the cutting process.

Start the Laser: Once everything is set, hit start on the computer. The unit beeps, signaling it’s ready to go. Head to the F1 laser unit and press start to begin the cutting process.

THE CUTTING PROCESS

First Cut: The process begins with cutting the outline of the banana. This is followed by engraving the texture, which gives the puzzle its detailed appearance. Finally, cut out the individual puzzle pieces. This is done in three phases to allow the wood to cool down between cuts, preventing any fire hazards or unwanted score marks.

Final Product: With some light sanding, the texture and cuts are smoothed out. The checkerboard pattern and puzzle pieces come together beautifully, showcasing the precision of the F1 laser.

SCALING UP THE PROJECT

Satisfied with the initial results, it's time to scale up the project. Switch to using cardboard for a larger puzzle, leveraging the S1 laser for this task.

TRANSITIONING TO THE S1 LASER

Check Height: The S1 laser has an automatic height check feature, making the setup process quicker and more efficient. Utilize this feature to get started.

Mark the Part: Using the laser’s targeting system, mark the corners in the interface, ensuring precise placement of the design.

Place the Material: Place the banana design on the cardboard, adjusting the size to maximize the use of the material.

Start Cutting: After lowering the safety shield, hit start on the computer and then press the blue button on the unit to begin. This process is estimated to take about 7 minutes, thanks to the speed and power adjustments.

FINE-TUNING FOR A CLEAN CUT

Adjust Settings: To achieve a clean cut without damaging the material or the laser bed, adjust the power and speed settings. The initial slower cut prevents fire, while the subsequent faster and hotter cut ensures clean, precise edges. This two-phase approach helps maintain the quality of the cut and protects the equipment.
