Why Screen Printers Should Learn Procreate

Why Screen Printers Should Learn Procreate | Screenprinting.com

Jacelyn Wedman |

Tons of screen printers have been using Adobe® Illustrator to create designs for prints. It’s necessary to know how to use it. But wouldn’t it be easier if you could just sketch out ideas, hone them in, and then finalize them to be printed? That’s where Procreate comes in. The Apple app makes the sketching and concepting process simple. If you’ve never used it before, check out the new Designing in Procreate course. Golden Press Studio’s Art Director Cory Romeiser will teach you the ins and outs of the program so you can start making rad art.

WHAT IS PROCREATE & WHY SHOULD I USE IT?

Procreate is a digital illustration software available on iPads. The app is becoming part of the designer's workflow because it’s inexpensive (one-time $10 fee) and simple to use. You can easily sketch out designs, manipulate art with your hands, and export it as an Illustrator file to make final touches before printing.

More screen printers are starting to use Procreate when sketching and concepting. You could use Illustrator, but it feels kinda clunky. With Procreate, you’re free to draw whatever comes to mind with no limitations. Thanks to the app's features, you can clean up a sketch, dial it in, and make it ready for finalization in Adobe® Illustrator. So if you have an iPad and Apple Pencil, Procreate is a worthy investment.

WHAT MAKES GOOD ART

A successful print needs a stellar design. Your artwork needs to stand out among thousands of other designs. With Procreate, you can successfully design extremely good art that takes your prints above and beyond.

But what does it mean to have “good art?” Good art catches the eye without being too busy. It’s clean, crisp lines and complimentary colors should draw you in.

"Good art" isn't just about the design. Sometimes, your client provides art that isn’t top quality. No matter the quality of the artwork, you still have to separate it and set it up for production. The better your design prep is, the more successful you're going to be. The new design course is designed to help you create good art again and again. When you know how to make fantastic designs, you can better serve your customers and local community. ScreenPrinting.com also has a new “Support Local” vector pack and a free design download, so you can support your local businesses and create good art at the same time.
