What’s the Deal with Red Glue? Why Premium Frames Make a Big Difference

Have you ever browsed screen printing frames and noticed some have clear glue while others use red glue? So what’s the real difference? And more importantly—does it actually affect your prints?

Short answer: Yes, it does. A lot.

In our latest video, we break down why premium red glue frames aren’t just a color choice—they’re engineered for stronger tension, better durability, and longer-lasting performance on press.

Premium Frame and Standard Frame on a press cart

1. The Glue: Super Glue vs. Epoxy Power

Standard clear glue is typically cyanoacrylate—basically super glue. It sets quickly and is cost-effective for stretching screens, but it’s not the strongest under pressure or chemical exposure.

Red glue, on the other hand, is a two-part epoxy. It’s more expensive and takes longer to cure, but it’s:

  • Stronger
  • More chemical-resistant
  • Flexible—which prevents mesh tears
  • Better at holding long-term tension

When you apply pressure to an economy frame, you’ll often see it separate. With a red glue frame? It stays rock solid.

2. The Frame: Thicker, Pre-Bowed, Built to Last

Baselayr Premium Red Glue Frames are made from thicker 1.5” aluminum tubing compared to the 1.375” used in economy frames. This added strength helps maintain consistent tension, especially under heavy use on automatic presses.

Even better, these frames are pre-bowed during stretching. That means they’re slightly flexed inward before mesh is applied. As mesh tension naturally tries to pull the frame inward, the frame pushes back—holding better tension for longer.

Real Results, Better Prints

In a direct test, a lower-cost 305 mesh screen registered just under 19 Newtons—the minimum for auto screen printing. The 23x31 Baselayr Premium Frame? Over 22 Newtons. That’s 15% more tension right out of the box—and it stays that way longer.

Upgrade Your Prints

If you're printing regularly or using an auto, these red glue frames are a game-changer. They’ll help improve registration, ink release, and overall print quality—while reducing the need for re-stretching or replacements.
